KUALA LUMPUR: A shoulder injury did not stop swimmer Welson Sim from winning his third gold medal on the final day of the Malaysian Open in Bukit Jalil on Sunday.
The Sarawakian clocked a ‘slow’ 16:18.35s for the 1,500m freestyle gold to add to the 200m and 400m freestyle he won earlier.
It is a mediocre time considering that Welson had clocked his personal best of 15:28.00 in March.
Kuala Lumpur’s Wong Jun Bin (16:19.93) won silver, followed by Sabah’s Wong Venn Chieh (16:39.49).
“I did not push myself as I did not want to aggravate my shoulder problem,” said Welson.
Johor’s Wong Fu Kang won the 50m breaststroke in 28.76. “I may have won but I am not happy as I failed to break my national record (28.59),” said Fu Kang.
Hong Kong emerged as overall champions with 20 gold, eight silver and two bronze, followed by Selangor (7-11-9) and Johor (4-5-4).
